名詞節

Grammar

名詞節はネイティブの会話や英文によく出てくる。また英語を話す時に使いこなせると自然な言い回しができる。名詞節が多用されている会話の例を元に文法構造を解説します。

① You know how he thinks.

"how he thinks"が名詞節で文の目的語になっています。名詞節を塊で捉えると、文は単純な「S(名詞)+V(動詞)+O(目的語)」になります。

② What I know about how Harvey thinks is that you can never be sure what Harvey is gonna think.

文の主語は"what I know about how Harvey thinks"で、補語は"that"以下の名詞節です。分の構造は「S(名詞)+V(動詞)+C(補語)」ですが、各々の名詞節の中にも名詞節がある為、ややこしい文ですが、名詞節を塊で捉えると理解しやすくなります。

③ I think that he is really not interested in whether you did it or not.

文の目的語が"that"以下の名詞節で「S(名詞)+V(動詞)+O(目的語)」の形です。ここでも"that"の名詞節の中に名詞節があります。

④ He's interested in what the evidence is, and what we can make it say.

"in"の後の"what the evidence is"と"what we can make it say"が名詞節になります。

⑤ I have no idea whether Harvey thinks (that) you had those people murdered or not.

"whether"の名詞節の中に"that"の名詞節があります。
